CBAC: Subcommittee Initiatives (2025-2026)

Biodiversity Subcommittee

  • Develop accessible resource on unique aspects of urban biodiversity
  • Develop a Wiki that organizes national, regional, and chapter biodiversity resources
  • Plan a nursery roundtable to discuss obstacles and opportunities
  • Collect examples of the successful uses of native plants

Climate Subcommittee

  • Develop education for small and medium-sized firms
  • Develop a site-focused methodology guide for whole life carbon assessment
  • Update key resources:
  • Expand outreach with supplier, manufacturers, software providers to:
    • Advocate for horticultural reporting standards
    • Update ASLA Product Directory with EPD categories and promote tool to manufacturers and practitioners
    • Promote action on third party-verified data
  • Coordinate with other subcommittees to identify cross-over opportunities

Equity Subcommittee

  • Continue supporting Indigenous landscape architects’ work with ASLA and the International Federation of Landscape Architects (IFLA) on Indigenous approaches to climate & biodiversity equity and justice and strengthening the capacity of the Indigenous Collective Group
  • Develop an Indigenous-led webinar series, resource, and Conference gathering to educate non-Indigenous landscape architects on Indigenous cultures and worldviews, leadership, sovereignty, stewardship, and approaches to co-design  
  • Host webinars on climate and biodiversity justice for ASLA members; develop an overview of biodiversity justice and the rights of nature
  • Host initial conversations with climate and social justice organizations
  • Establish a code of conduct and guidance for meaningful engagement with communities and community-based organizations

Advocacy Subcommittee

  • Develop and launch social media campaigns on the new Climate & Biodiversity Action Plan
  • Rebuild ASLA climate & biodiversity media lists
  • Present on climate & biodiversity at allied organization conferences
  • Develop talking points on how to address climate & biodiversity together
  • Develop a guide on communicating plan goals in different political contexts
  • Achieve 38 chapters with chairs and committees by the end of 2026
  • Advise on ASLA communication strategies
  • Advise on Wiki development
  • Support planning of regional ASLA Chapter conferences and committees
  • Develop a guide and template for small- and mid-sized firms on social media success
