Dr. Ayana Elizabeth Johnson Will Headline the 2022 Conference on Landscape Architecture in San Francisco, Nov. 11-14

Johnson, an internationally celebrated scientist and advocate for climate solutions and biodiversity, will address more than 6,000 landscape architecture professionals as they release their first Climate Action Plan

Ayana Elizabeth Johnson, Ph.D., will headline the American Society of Landscape Architects’ 2022 Conference on Landscape Architecture, the organization announced today. Media may request conference credentials by emailing press@asla.org.

Who: Dr. Ayana Elizabeth Johnson is a marine biologist, policy expert, writer, and Brooklyn native. She is co-founder of Urban Ocean Lab, a think tank for the future of coastal cities. She co-edited the bestselling climate anthology All We Can Save, co-founded The All We Can Save Project, and co-created the Spotify/Gimlet climate solutions podcast How to Save a Planet. Recently, she co-authored the Blue New Deal, a roadmap for including the ocean in climate policy. Previously, she was executive director of the Waitt Institute, developed policy at the EPA and NOAA, and taught as an adjunct professor at New York University.
 
Dr. Johnson earned a BA from Harvard University in environmental science and public policy, and a Ph.D. from Scripps Institution of Oceanography in marine biology. Her writing has been published widely, including in The New York Times, Washington Post, and Scientific American. She serves on the advisory boards of Environmental Voter Project and Scientific American, and on the board of directors for GreenWave and Patagonia. Recent recognitions include the Schneider Award for climate communication and Time’s 100 Next List. Outside magazine called her “the climate leader we need.”

What: The nation’s largest and most influential gathering of landscape architects will feature more than 140 sessions, 300 exhibitors, and more than 6,000 participants. Conference education sessions and field trips will be led by many of the most prominent landscape architects practicing around the world and will focus on planning and design in the following contexts, and more:

  • Climate solutions, including the Climate Action Plan launch;
  • Cities and communities;
  • Racial equity;
  • Post-disaster resilience;
  • Water management;
  • Transportation infrastructure;
  • Treasured California landscapes; and
  • Biodiversity;
  • Affordable housing.

Credentialed media are invited to participate in a variety of opportunities throughout the conference. Media opportunities will include access to the Dr. Johnson’s session and other plenary moments, the EXPO floor, the professional and student award ceremony, and education sessions.
